Network License Server: Orion
Software licensing and copy protection: answers to frequently asked questions on EasyLicenser license manager and Orion license server
Orion Floating licensing Frequently Asked Questions: Answers

Q.

What does my customer install on their premises? What do they need to provide?

A.

Agilis provides a ready-packaged version of Orion for re-distribution to your customers. This includes the Orion server, a pre-configured database, and a pre-configured Tomcat application server for installation on any Java-capable platform (e.g. Windows, Linux, Solaris, HP-UX). They can also use an existing Tomcat instance, or any application server, or servlet engine.

Note only one Orion server is required for your customer's entire global network/VPN/WAN. They do not need to install a server per local area network.

Q.

Can I get access to the licensing data on an Orion Server installed at my customer?

A.

You can retain the System Administrator login, and by agreement with your customer log into the Orion Server remotely to run reports and so forth. Alternatively, you can arrange with your customer that they will periodically send you a copy of the Orion database so you can run reports against it on your premises.

Q. What is Internet-based floating licensing?
A.

Customers who want floating licensing also have the option with Orion of not having to install any license server on their premises at all, but accessing their licenses managed in an Administration Domain by your hosted Orion server. This has the advantages for them of not having any license server to install and manage, and has the advantage for you of giving you access to all their licensing activity, so you can see how your product is being used.

Q.

Can a user take license with them on their laptop - commuter licensing?

A.

Yes. A user can check out a license for any period up to the maximum limit (set by you). They then retain that license whether or not the application or Orion is running or their laptop is on, and while they have the license it is automatically locked to their machine. They can return it at any time, or it will automatically expire at the end of the checkout period and so be available to other users.

If you wish you can configure a grace period, to allow them to carry on using a license for a while if they are unable to connect to the server to renew their checkout.

Q.

What if a user checks out a license for a long time and their machine is damaged or lost?

A.

You have the option of allowing your end-user's system administrator to force a check-in - that is, make the server release a license and make it available to others. This is obviously open to abuse so it is up to you whether or not you make this available to them.
